Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future: The Evolution of Traditions at the NH Farm, Forest & Garden Expo

Deerfield, NH – It’s February, and around the world just 30ish days ago many partook in “standard” traditions to ring in the new year while others embarked to proclaim the start of a “new” tradition of celebration. When we think of our own earthly timeline, I’m sure most of us can attest that even the longest running traditions of our lineage have undergone a change or two over the years. Some call these changes as modernization, or advancements to the positive, others insist we are pulling at the strings of fabric that once bound us together.

For many generations, raising animals, growing crops, felling timbers and managing land was the heart of New Hampshire’s bounty. These natural resources, while diminished by demand and overshadowed by other industries, are still very essential to our state’s health and wealth. Those stewards who once managed these 100 years ago, are no different than you and I today. While they operated with deep solidarity to standard traditions…they too embarked year after year in new traditions. It’s the advancements they made in those annual whims, or “new” science that led us to be more resourceful, more efficient and in many ways, safer in our operations.

The bridge that connects the old and the new isn’t from one static place to the next over some untraversed 100ft ravine…no it’s much less scary than that. It’s just being together as a community, this is where ideas sprout and indeed, find the nurturing they desire to thrive. You see, creating new traditions is really traditional in the oldest sense of the definition.

In its 42nd year, the New Hampshire Farm, Forest and Garden Expo continues to provide a community space where we honor traditions new and old. This two day “continuum” of time educates and entertains, while it connects us to the roots of our resources in the most meaningful ways. Where else can you take a horse drawn buggy ride, learn about how to begin beekeeping, try out the newest compact farm equipment, learn how to manage your land to protect its future conservation? Maybe instead you came to watch the timber competition, listen to some live music, indulge in some maple cotton candy, pet some animals and watch your kids grow with lots of hands-on activities? Ok, maybe you’re just curious about homesteading and becoming more self-resourceful…you could take a class from the UNH Extension, maybe learn to cultivate mushrooms, learn more about Amateur Radio Communications or even solar power solutions for your property needs?

There really isn’t another one stop shop for the expertise and camaraderie that is on display this May 2nd and 3rd at the Deerfield Fairgrounds. Come be part of the evolution of traditions in this annual event at the New Hampshire Farm, Forest and Garden Expo. To learn more, visit https://www.nhfarmandforestexpo.org/
